Skincare Isn’t ‘One Size Fits All’

Skincare has become a hot commodity lately and it seems like everyone is either composing threads and/or articles on how to achieve the perfect skin or creating cosmetic lines that guarantee life changing results. “What’s your skincare routine” has steadily replaced “J. Cole went platinum with no features” on Twitter and while its an innocent question, it may leave your skin in a vulnerable position.

While ‘perfecting’ your skincare routine may be top priority, it’s important to understand that skincare isn’t one size fits all. Despite your friend, family member or your fav online personality experiencing amazing results with a specific product that doesn’t mean that you will achieve the same outcome. If you’re in a rut when it comes to your skincare routine and you’re consistently wondering what you can do to improve your skin, listen up and pay attention.

Is The Product Really Bad?

I understand that social media has conditioned people to think that something can either be good or trash (with no in between) but I disagree. Just because a product didn’t work on your skin doesn’t mean it’s horrible. As stated above it’s important to recognize that every individual will experience different results. Repeat after me: every individual will experience different results. Once you recognize that a skincare product isn’t for you, stop using it and move on to another product that works for your skin type. Is your skin oily? Is it dry? Do you suffer from hyperpigmentation? These are some important components to note while researching skincare products.

Are You Doing A Patch Test?

Onto the next section and my favourite question of them all: Are you doing patch tests? While the ingredients may be presented for you and everyone else to see that doesn’t mean that the product will be compatible with your skin. Patch tests are so essential and shouldn’t be skipped AT ALL. The last thing you want is an allergic reaction, splotchy skin, bumps or worse. Patch tests will give you a better understanding of the skincare product and will prevent your entire face from getting a nasty breakout.

Before I lather a brand new product on my face, I carefully read the instructions and use a generous amount on my cheeks. If nothing happens after a while I will incorporate the product in my skincare routine almost immediately. I encourage you to do the same.

“Help Please”

Have you enlisted the help of an consultant and/or dermatologist? If not you should. Social media has a plethora of professionals who will gladly point you in the right direction. I highly recommend my personal favourite @HeyAprill of www.heyaprill.com who I affectionately call the ‘Skincare Godmother’ to help you with all your skincare concerns and beauty woes. They don’t miss a beat when it comes to educating people on how to properly care for your skin and what products are best to use for your skin type.
